Regardless of the type of car you drive, you need it every day. You rely on it more than anything else in your life; a single day without it can ruin plans. At Farmer’s, we believe in making sure you always have the most reliable protection for your vehicle as well as making it easy to purchase, maintain, and receive timely assistance with that protection. So, what is so important about car insurance?

What makes car insurance so important?

Insurance is vital for your car for the simple reason that you are legally required to own it. If you are pulled over and don’t have insurance, you could be facing a hefty fine and other legal penalties. Because of the many benefits that car insurance offers, the government has decided that every driver must carry it.

However, that is far from the only reason. Car insurance’s primary job is to lessen the negative consequences that can occur due to events on the road. If someone damages your car and drives away without contact information, your insurance can cover the cost of repairs. If you damage someone’s car, then the insurance that you own can cover the costs of repairs to their vehicle.  If you get into a significant accident, car insurance can cover medical expenses as well.

What kinds of car insurance are there?

While every car insurance policy is unique, there are two primary kinds of policies: liability and full coverage.

Liability coverage is the kind mandated by law, and you’ll usually see its value expressed in three numbers, such as $25,000/$50,000/$15,000. It will cover medical costs and property damage to other people. Your insurance will only cover the costs up to a specified amount – that’s what those numbers mean. In this case, it will cover up to $25,000 of medical bills per person, up to $50,000 per accident, and up to $15,000 of property damage. Any amounts above that, you are required to pay.

Full coverage insurance includes liability insurance, as well as collision and comprehensive. Collision coverage pays for repairs to your car after an accident (remember, liability insurance only covers the other person’s car). Comprehensive coverage covers any other situation where your vehicle could be damaged – such as weather, theft, vandalism, and more. Sometimes, if you have a car loan, your lender will require you to have full coverage insurance to protect their asset.

How much will my car insurance policy cost?

Every situation is different, so you’ll need to reach out in person to get an accurate quote for the cost of car insurance. Your costs depend on many factors, such as: how much your car is worth, your driving record, the kind of insurance you select, and whether you pay monthly or in a lump sum. As an insurance agent, I’m passionate about making sure that you get the coverage that best fits your needs, for the best price available.

Any changes to your driving situation mean its time to take another look at your insurance coverage. If you buy a new (or new-to-you) car, your coverage needs might change. If you add a new driver to your policy, especially a teenager, your costs will change. If you and your spouse decide to downsize to a one-car household, that could have an impact on your insurance needs as well. Paying off a car loan is another time you might want to reevaluate your coverage. Even relocating can affect your insurance costs. Determining exactly what you need can feel overwhelming, but that’s why I’m here. Give me a call today to figure out exactly the right car insurance policy for you.
